With US elections on the horizon, many celebrities and iconic faces in tech industry have chosen their side and endorsed their preferred candidate for the next presidency. Beyond traditional campaign donations and endorsements, high-profile figures in Hollywood and Silicon Valley are using their platforms, fortunes, and influence as a stage for US candidates to shape public opinion and rally support for their chosen candidates.
Harris’ supporters
The multi-Grammy award-winning American singer announced her complete support for Harris after the presidential debate, saying, “As a voter, I carefully read and reviewed all the plans of both candidates… Some time ago, I discovered that Donald Trump’s website was using an AI-generated image claiming my endorsement of him. This issue heightened my concerns about AI and misinformation. That’s why I felt it necessary to officially state my position. I will vote for Kamala Harris. She fights for the rights and values I believe in… Tim Walz is also an excellent choice, as he has spent decades advocating for emerging gender group rights and reproductive rights.”
Bill Gates
In July, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gats didn’t state his support, but appeared to offer positive words toward Harris, saying it is “great to have somebody who’s younger, who can think about things like AI and how we shape that in the right way.” But “I don’t tell other people how to vote”. Recent reports indicate he has donated $50 million to the non-profit wing of a Democratic political action committee supporting Harris. Earlier this year, his ex-wife, French Gates donated $13 million to Harris groups which placed her among the top individual donors.
Eminem recently stated his support for Harris’s presidential campaign during a rally in Detroit. He emphasized the importance of free speech, saying, “I think it’s important to use your voice. So I’m encouraging everybody to get out and vote.” He mentioned that people shouldn’t be afraid of retribution or of making their opinion known, adding that Harris “supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld.” Eminem, who previously criticized former President Trump, joined former President Obama at the event, where he introduced Obama on stage.
According to the New York Times, Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and presidential candidate, donated around $50 million to a nonprofit organization supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign. The check, however, reportedly only came after months of pressure from other billionaires and Democratic donors. Bloomberg, with the net worth of $105 billion, is considered as the second largest disclosed individual donor to Democrats in this election cycle, after the investor and philanthropist George Soros. But publicly, Democrats observed that Mr. Bloomberg was donating nowhere close to what he had spent during the presidency of Donald J. Trump.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
The former Republican governor of California and the action movie star, said he will be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz in a rare endorsement. He has acknowledged his endorsement of Harris in a post on X, saying,” To someone like me who talks to people all over the world and still knows America is the shining city on a hill, calling America is a trash can for the world is so unpatriotic, it makes me furious. And I will always be an American before I am a Republican. That’s why I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.” When asked about Trump he responded,” He will divide, he will insult, he will find new ways to be more un-American than he already has been, and we, the people, will get nothing but more anger.”
Mark Cuban
Mark Cuban, an American entrepreneur, investor, and media personality known for his ownership of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and his appearances as an investor on the television show Shark Tank, has publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election as part of a venture capitalist group called “VCs for Kamala.” This group emphasizes the importance of democracy for the health of the economy and entrepreneurship, values that Cuban strongly supports. He has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and believes that Harris’s leadership aligns more with fostering technological progress and the American dream. Recently, he has been under the pressure of Trump campaign for insulting pro-Trump women.
Trump’s supporters
Known for roles in Chuck and Shazam!, Zachery Levi has voiced conservative political support, notably aligning with Donald Trump in the 2024 election. He has explained that his decision originated from a desire for government reform and his belief in Trump’s approach to issues like border security and economic policy. Levi showed frustration with Hollywood’s dominant liberal stance, which he says pressures conservative voices into silence.
Elon Musk
Perhaps the most noticeable supporter in the entire 2024 election is the founder of Tesla and SpaceX. Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump in the recent election appears to be influenced by several policy and regulatory considerations, as well as ideological alignment on specific issues. Musk created America PAC, a super PAC that has already received over $70 million in donations from him and other supporters to fund Trump-aligned initiatives. This endorsement has also sparked discussions around Musk’s personal gains if Trump were to be re-elected. Trump hinted at appointing Musk to a cost-cutting role in government, which could potentially allow Musk to benefit from unique tax breaks on his assets.
Mel Gibson
The star and the director of “Braveheart” has not explicitly confirmed his decision for the 2024 election, but he has made public comments suggesting conservative leanings. Recently, he has shared critical views on Kamala Harris, using a comment that some interpreted as indirectly supportive of the political right, though he has not openly declared a stance on Trump himself in the current election cycle. When asked about whether Trump will win this election or not, he responded, “I think that’s a pretty good guess. I know what it’ll be like if we let her [Harris] in. And that ain’t good. Miserable track record. No policies to speak of. She’s got the IQ of a fence post.”
David Sacks, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist, has emerged as a notable supporter of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race. Alongside figures like Marc Andreessen, Elon Musk, and Joe Lonsdale, Sacks is one of several tech leaders who have shown support for Trump’s campaign through endorsements and substantial fundraising efforts. For instance, in June 2024, Sacks hosted a major Trump fundraiser in San Francisco with a ticket price starting at $50,000, raising millions for the campaign. Sacks cited issues like the economy, foreign policy, and border control as key reasons for his support, viewing Trump as a strong pro-business candidate and critic of what Sacks sees as California’s political failures.
Kanye West
The controversial rapper has once again thrown his support behind Trump. When asked by paparazzi in February if he would be voting for the former president, 47-year-old West said: “Yeah, of course, it’s Trump all day.” This endorsement follows a complicated relationship between West and Trump, marked by a controversial meeting in 2022 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where West reportedly proposed the idea of Trump serving as his vice-presidential running mate. Trump, however, was reportedly offended by the suggestion, leading to a tense exchange between the two, which also included critical comments from Trump about West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.
When it comes to conservative actors, Clint Eastwood is considered to be one of the permanent names on the list. His political career has been nuanced, supporting both republican and libertarian candidates over the years. When asked about Trump he said,“ Trump’s just saying what’s on his mind. And sometimes it’s not so good. And sometimes it’s … I mean, I can understand where he’s coming from, but I don’t always agree with it.”
James Woods
James Howard Woods is an American actor, known for his fast-talking, intense roles on screen and stage. He has received numerous accolades, including three Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for two Academy Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has acknowledged his endorsement for Trump saying,” I am voting for this guy. I just think we need him. I don’t want to make America great again. I just want to make America America again, please,” Woods pleaded. “We are literally standing on the edge of our toes on the abyss looking into the bowels of hell in this election.”
